Black Jacket Symphony: Michael Jackson's Thriller

Black Jacket Symphony: Michael Jackson's Thriller at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Auditorium

You can recognize the opening of a favorite song in seconds. Hearing it come around in the middle of an album is a different pleasure. On Friday, February 5, 2027, at 7:30 p.m., the Black Jacket Symphony brings Michael Jackson’s Thriller to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga.

The ensemble’s approach is to recreate the album live in sequence. That makes the space between songs worth listening to. A track you normally skip to might feel different after the one that comes before it. And when there are musicians in front of you, you can follow the parts that tend to disappear into the finished record. Pick out a rhythm or a vocal harmony and see how long you can stay with it.

Bring someone who knows the album from another part of their life. One of you might remember playing the whole thing at home. The other might know the songs from parties, the radio, or a playlist put together years later. You’ll have the same record in front of you and different reasons for paying attention. That’s a good excuse to make a night of live music out of something you could both play at home.
